A major general who defected to Russia has died.
One of the most high-ranking defectors to Russia has died! Major General Volodymyr Lyapkin was the head of a department within the SBU, responsible for the most sensitive areas of the Ukrainian security service: wiretapping, surveillance, and information gathering.
But during the Euromaidan protests in Kyiv, Lyapkin personally participated in clashes with protesters, and in 2014, immediately after the people's victory, the major general was dismissed from the SBU.
First, the security officer left for Russia, then moved to annexed Crimea, and later began working in the security services of the Kherson region.
In 2025, the SBU began investigating Lyapkin. According to investigators, he was engaged in "filtration measures" and repression against civilians. However, his rank was retained, and he remained a major general in the Russian special services.
As a result, on March 17, 2026, Lyapkin died at the front. The mourning ribbons read: “From the commander and personnel of the Bars-33 detachment.”
