Windows Movie Maker
Since most of the world still has Windows PC's, I think it's important to at least MENTION the fact that your computer does come with a free piece of software for those who want to spend 0 money on video editing software. With it's rather simplistic interface and ease of use... it CAN effectively cut your video clips, move them around into whatever order you'd like, add transition effects, and even add a musical score to help you add emotion to your videos.
The only problem with this software is that because it's FREE, it IS limited in the amount of creative effects that you can implement... but it's still worth checking out if you're just starting out.
iMovie
Now, for those of you with Apple computers, you ALSO have a free software that came bundled inside from the moment you bought it, and it's called iMovie.
When I used to work for Apple, I actually used to teach this software to my customers as they scheduled appointments to come in and sit down with me for an hour at a time. I have to say that for a free piece of software and part of the iLife package that comes bundled in those computers... iMovie is a pretty solid piece of software that let's you do things that really shouldn't be free! But... since it's Apple, they really don't have any need for extra revenue from this product.
Final Cut X
Final Cut Pro X is the latest prosumer software from Apple and only works on Apple computers. For the price, it's absolutely brilliant.
The interface looks a lot like iMovie, but it has much more functionality and plug-in options that allow you to do things that aren't possible in iMovie, like add filters and effects that look like a Hollywood feature. Its older brother, Final Cut Pro 7, is a program that I still use myself and still give extensive training courses on, however, since Final Cut 7 is no longer available from Apple, I'll go ahead and list FCPX as the option of choice since it is now slowly growing into an editing standard... especially because in the next 5 years, all of our computers will have touch screen capabilities.
Final Cut X's interface lends itself beautifully to this workflow so as a new editor, I would suggest getting used to this interface.
Priced at just $299, it's a pretty awesome piece of editing software that let's you get the job done like a professional.
Adobe Premiere Elements
This program is a fantastic way to get your feet wet in the realm of editing. Priced at only around $100, this package is absolutely perfect for anyone just starting out in the editing world that wants to work in a prosumer type environment.
This program, like it's bigger and much more expensive brother, Adobe Premiere Pro, allows you to do everything that Final Cut Pro does.
The look and feel of the timeline in this interface is classic to all basic editing workflows and in my opinion, is one of the best options in regards to getting started in editing these days.
This program works on both Windows PC's as well as Apple computers, so there's no limitations when it comes to your current computer.
