Making Foreground Work | Organising a Scene for Better Composition
In this video, I head over to Craig Bay in Parksville with photographer Alister Benn to explore how I can better organise a scene using foreground elements.
Foreground is often talked about as something you should include, but simply placing something in the front of the frame isn’t enough. The real challenge is how the rest of the scene works with it — how the elements connect, balance, and support each other.
I look for ways to simplify what can often feel like a busy or chaotic scene, and how small adjustments to composition can bring a bit more order and flow to the image.
I also walk through the editing of one of the photographs, showing how I balance a darker foreground with a brighter background to keep the image feeling natural while still guiding the viewer’s eye.
As always, this isn’t about rules — it’s about recognising what works together and building a photograph around that.
