This is Shadow of War! It's the Christmas so the new releases have been slow meaning it's time to look back at some older games. I always watch all the Lord of the Rings movies around this time, so that bring me in the mood to play this one again. That's why I figured I should also make a video about it. I hope it's helpful.

The developer describes the game as an open-world action adventure where players forge their own army, dominate enemy leaders, and reshape Mordor from within.

Middle-earth Shadow of War is a third-person open-world action game set in the Lord of the Rings universe. Players explore large regions of Mordor, climb and traverse freely, and engage in fast melee combat built around counters, dodges, and executions. Rather than focusing on clearing camps, the gameplay revolves around hunting named Orc captains and choosing how to approach each encounter.

The Nemesis system sits on top of this loop and makes the world feel reactive and personal. Captains remember previous encounters, develop strengths and weaknesses, and rise through enemy ranks based on player actions. Ignoring intel can turn fights chaotic, while preparation allows for targeted takedowns and controlled encounters. As players progress, captains can be dominated and recruited, forming an army that directly affects large-scale fortress sieges.

Shadow of War includes a full story campaign, but its main appeal lies in its systems-driven gameplay. The endgame can become repetitive, and the Shadow Wars introduce a grind-heavy structure, though all microtransactions were removed years ago. Visually, the game shows its age, but it runs smoothly on modern hardware and remains mechanically distinct.

For players considering a purchase today, Shadow of War offers strong value at its current discounted price, especially for those interested in emergent systems and open-ended combat rather than traditional RPG progression.
