One of the best things you can do, if not THE best thing, to protect yourself against spam is to have several different email addresses. However, registering 20 times with a different address is quite tedious. The idea is to use a single email account with which several alias email addresses are used. This allows you to quickly create aliases and deactivate/activate them if necessary. This way, if your address is leaked in a hack or is misused, you can simply deactivate the relevant alias.
