Simple DIY process for engraving stainless steel with table salt.
In this video, we present a quick and easy process for engraving designs and other details on stainless steel without the use of acids or other hazardous substances. This is achieved through the electrolysis of chloride (table salt): the stainless steel object must first be completely covered with a thin layer of highly chemically resistant insulating material; in this experiment, we used molten tar. A sharp point or other tool is used to make an incision over this layer, removing the insulating layer until the metal underneath is exposed. Furthermore, the object must be connected to the positive terminal of a battery or power supply with a voltage of 5 to 15 volts. A plate of any metal connected to the negative terminal and placed facing the side to be engraved must be immersed in the solution. The solution is composed of water with sodium chloride dissolved until saturation is reached. The corrosive action on stainless steel (where exposed) is due to the development of nascent chlorine, which attacks almost all metals, including gold. The chlorine does not escape freely into the air but combines with the sodium hydroxide that forms on the negative plate. The bubbles that develop on the object are made of oxygen, and those on the plate are made of hydrogen. The solution creates sodium hypochlorite (bleach).
