At Oshkosh 2018, a quick look at the new Diamond DA62. This is a 7 seater, twin engine airplane from Diamondstar. one of their newest aircraft. We are also waiting for the twin engine DA52. My first impression of the DA62 is that it is quite big. Put it next to the Diamond DA42, the twin 4 seater, and you’ll see the difference.
Diamond DA62 has much longer wings also the airframe is longer and wider. The DA62 can sit up to seven people. There are 3 rows of seats. 2 in the front, 3 in the middle, and 2 more int the back. I wanted to see how comfortable those back seats were, so I got in. The verdict is: they are comfortable, lots of leg room even from adults, but very limited head room. Those back seats are probably best for children or very small body frame adults.
Moving on to the cockpit, the Diamond DA62 is all modern. Has a full deck of glass avionics, your controls and switches are very simply, and most notable, the DA62 double engines have a FADEC (A full authority digital engine (or electronics) control system). It’s quite nice actually, as it reduces time on the ground for flights. Also takes some workload off the pilot. There are no mixture or prop levers, so you only have the Throttle control to play with.
The DA62 will cruise between 159 knots to 200 knots while burning between 12 an 17 gallons of jet fuel per hour. The price for this beauty? $1.2 million.
