The assault and killing of a middle-aged woman in the Ughaiti area of Uttar Pradesh’s Budaun district by a local priest and his two accomplices sparked outrage across the country. A member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), Chandramukhi Devi, stoked controversy by saying that the Budaun gangrape and murder incident, involving the 50-year-old Anganwadi worker, could have been saved if the victim had not ventured out in the evening or had a child or a family member along with her. She made insensitive remarks saying that a woman should keep track of time, and should not venture out late. After receiving severe backlash, Devi tried to retract her statements.
