Negative Flaw: Film Scratches
That is heartbreaking. Check out those horizontal scratches. Those occur when the emulsion is dragged across something sharp. This can happen in the film cassette if some dust or sand gets trapped in the felt at the opening or it can happen in the camera if some sand, a piece of film, or a slight sharp spot in the metal gets into the film path. With sheet film and removable camera backs, this can happen if the dark slide has dirt or a flaw on it.
The fix for this is prevention. Here are some things you can do:
If you use re-usable film cassettes and spool your own 35mm, you’re more likely to experience this in the cassette, so it’s a good idea to clean them or track them. One thing you can do is number each cassette and record a data frame at the front of each roll of film. Record the cassette number on it. That way if your film had a travel scratch you’ll know which cassette to clean or replace the felt on.
Clean your camera’s film travel pathway if they have dust. The travel pathway includes the film take-up spool area as well.
Inspect your film back dark slides and sheet film dark slides for damage and debris. Also, if you have multiple film backs, number them for roll-film cameras and record that on a data frame. For sheet film, a counting notch code can provide insight into all manner of problems with film backs. Both the data frame that I’ve mentioned multiple times now and the sheet film back notching system will be covered in the next round of Ask David questions, each in their own video.
Overall, as long as you maintain your gear well, issues like this will be few and far between. If you’re out taking photos at a beach, oat a dirt bike race, inside a sandblasting box, or in a sandstorm, just be sure to clean your camera’s insides afterward to help prevent film travel scratches.
