On this episode Mauro is going to work on a nice juniperus rigida . Transforming the tree with a drastic change of front . Tosho tend to have a very different feeling then Shimpaku. The wood is harder and tend to have more jagged jins and burrow like growths on them. There are certain times of the year that you work on Tosho. April and May is the beginning of Tosho season according to the location . In spring you can cut, wire and repot all at the same time. Tosho can be repotted earlier in the Spring also. Tosho should not be repotted in the Fall if winter in your region is very cold and you don’t have a green house. During the Summer, they will grow quickly and cutting and pinching can be done two to three times a year. Watering Tosho is fairly easy because they love water and they don’ t need to stay dry as other junipers .A basic rule to rigida juniper is that when you prune it, you have to prune it back to a point where there is still foliage. If you prune the branch and leave no green, the branch will die back to where there is green foliage.Creating pads on a Tosho is similar to Shimpaku. You want to create mulitple fan shape pads that have some density and volume to them. After having the structure set the clip and grow tecnique helps to mature the pads and create volumes. See how the juniper turns after Mauro’s work on this video !
