[Building the Lab - Episode 3] - How to Download and Install Windows Server 2022 on Hyper V | Using Windows 11
Prerequisites: Ensure Hardware Virtualization Support: Your computer's processor must support hardware virtualization (Intel VT-x or AMD-V). This feature needs to be enabled in your BIOS settings.
Enable Hyper-V: Hyper-V is a Windows feature that needs to be enabled.
Here’s how to enable it: Open Control Panel - Programs - Programs and Features - Turn Windows features on or off. Check the box for Hyper-V and its sub-options (Hyper-V Platform, Hyper-V Management Tools, Hyper-V Services). Click OK and let Windows install the necessary features. You may need to restart your computer.
Steps to Download and Install Windows Server 2022 on Hyper-V: Download Windows Server 2022 ISO: Go to the Microsoft Evaluation Center or Volume Licensing Service Center if you have a license. Download the ISO file for Windows Server 2022.
Create a New Virtual Machine in Hyper-V:
Search for and open Hyper-V Manager from the Start Menu.
In Hyper-V Manager, click on New - Virtual Machine to start the New Virtual Machine Wizard.
Follow the wizard:
Enter a name and choose a location for the virtual machine.
Specify Generation 2 for better performance (recommended for Windows Server 2012 and later).
Assign RAM (e.g., 4GB or more).
Configure Network (default switch or specific virtual switch if needed).
Create a virtual hard disk: Choose a size (e.g., 60GB or more).
Install operating system later (since you’ll be using the ISO file).
Install Windows Server 2022: With the virtual machine created: Right-click on the virtual machine in Hyper-V Manager and select Settings. Go to Media - DVD Drive - Image file (.iso). Browse and select the Windows Server 2022 ISO you downloaded. Click Apply and then OK.
Start the virtual machine by right-clicking it and selecting Start.
The virtual machine will boot from the ISO. Follow the prompts to install Windows Server 2022, including choosing language, time/currency format, and keyboard/input method.
Select Install now and proceed with the installation. You may need to enter your license key during this process.
Complete Installation:
After installation completes, Windows Server 2022 will restart. Log in with the credentials you set during installation.
