Brooklyn Park firefighters spent Tuesday afternoon battling a house fire that was fueled by a damaged gas line. When firefighters arrived at the home in the 2700 block of 98th Avenue North flames were shooting out from the side of the house.

Firefighters, however, had to delay their response when fire reached the gas meter and supply line to the home that may attributed to the deck collapsing.

"The utility company is here, had to dig and find the valve in the front yard in order to shut the gas off to the home, delayed part of our responses," said Brooklyn Park Fire Chief Ken Prillaman. "That gas line continued to fuel the fire we found when we arrived."

The fire caused significant damage. Chief Prillaman estimates the gas line situation delayed fighting the fire by about 20 minutes. There was no word on a cause.
