Installing new hardware on your kitchen or bathroom cabinets is a great way to enhance a room. It can also be tedious and nerve wracking. Measuring incorrectly when installing the new hardware on any one of the doors will throw off the uniformity of all the cabinets.
Here’s an easy way to make a template – or a jig -- that will help you install the hardware on all of your cabinet doors in the exact same location. If you take the time to make a jig before you begin, it will save you time later and eliminate potential errors.
The first thing to do is to decide where you want to place the hardware on each door. Some people prefer pulls and handles, others prefer knobs.
Go to the cabinet door and measure from the two edges of the cabinet door to the hole you want to drill to place your hardware. This measurement is different on each door but it is usually anywhere from ½ an inch to 3 inches from each edge.
Now go to the jig and measure the same measurement from each edge and mark with a pencil. Drill straight through that mark to make your “pilot” hole.
Now check the pilot hole in the jig. Place it on the door. Put a nail through the hole and lightly push. Take the jig away and see if the light indentation from the nail is where you want to drill your hole. Re-measure to make sure it’s exactly where you wanted it to be.
If this is in the correct spot, put your jig back on the cabinet door. Drill straight through the hole in the jig – and continue straight through the cabinet door.
Now you can install the hardware. Repeat this process with the jig and the drill on every other cabinet door. You will be done installing your hardware in no time, and all the hardware will be uniformly positioned.
You can flip to the back of doors that have the opposite swing direction, or if your distance from the top and side is EXACTLY the same, you can rotate the jig for the opposite door.
