So this track was famously included as the opening track to Deep Dish’s GU021 in Moscow, which is one of my all time favorite mix compilations. Speaking about the track alone, I don’t think I’ve heard a better pairing than 16B’s driving basslines and melodies with Morel’s velvet vocals. It’s almost like Morel’s voice is an instrument on its own, and 16B built the whole track around that sound.
In researching the track, I learned about an interesting collaborative web that exists between the artists on this track. “Escape” came out in 2001 and definitely was not the first time 16B, Morel, and Deep Dish crossed paths. In fact, in 1999, Morel released “True” on Deep Dish’s Yoshitoshi Records which was a massive track in its own right and the release was loaded with Deep Dish remixes. “True” eventually got a UK release the following year on Hooj, and none other than 16B provided a remix.
I really love 16B’s work. His real name is Omid Nourizadeh which is why you sometimes see him credited as Omid 16B. The first time I ever heard 16B was his remix of Gus Gus’ “Believe” which Sasha and John Digweed chose to be the iconic introductory track on Northern Exposure 2. They also included 16B’s remix of “True” on the UK version of their “Communicate” album in 2000, the same year that Deep Dish included the same 16B remix on their Renaissance Ibiza album. I love discovering these networks between massively talented DJs and producers, and it’s a consistent reminder that this scene is really small and intimate at its core.
So yeah, really really had a lot of fun with this, and really stoked on learning more about 16B who is definitely becoming one of my all time favorites. (Full reaction at link in bio)
