Estimating Percentages
1 .Take 10% or 1% of a Number by Shifting Decimal Left 1 or 2 Places
10% of 30.0 is 3.00
2 .Multiply or Divide 10% or 1% Result to Reach Exact Sought Percent
10% × 2 = 20% | 3 × 2 = 6 | 20% of 30 is 6!
Adding or Subtracting Percentages
Adding x percent to a Value = Value(1 + x% as a decimal)
25% more than 40 → 40(1.25) = 50
Subtracting x percent from a Value = Value(1 – x% as a decimal)
25% less than 40 → 40(0.75) = 30
English to Math Translations
“What” : x (variable)
“Is” : =
“Percent” or “%” : ÷ 100 or Shift Decimal Left Two Places
“Of” : Multiply
“Out Of” : Divide
“What Percent” or “x%” : (64&𝑥/100)
What Percent of 10% of 35 is 70?
(64&𝑥/100) × 0.1 × 35 = 70
x × 0.001 × 35 = 70 → Multiply by 1,000
35x = 70,000 → Divide by 35
x = 2,000 → 70 is 2,000 percent of 3.5
