Today, we’re excited to showcase two exceptional $5 Liberty Half Eagles, both minted in Dahlonega and certified by NGC. These iconic coins are struck in 90% gold and 10% copper, weigh 8.36 grams, and have a diameter of 22.5 mm.

Both feature the same stunning design: on the obverse, you’ll find a classic portrayal of Lady Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed with “LIBERTY,” surrounded by 13 stars representing the original colonies, and the date "1844" beneath. The reverse shows a powerful heraldic eagle with a shield on its chest, holding an olive branch and arrows in its talons, symbolizing both peace and readiness for war. Encircling the eagle are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and the denomination “FIVE D.”

The first coin is the 1840-D $5 Liberty, certified AU-50 by NGC. With a mintage of just 22,896 coins, this is the first true Liberty Head $5 from the Dahlonega Mint. Only 178 are known in all grades, and this coin is one of just 23 certified in AU-50.

The second coin is the 1844-D $5 Liberty, certified in stunning AU-58 condition. With a low mintage of 88,982 coins, only about 600 remain today. This piece is one of just 64 in AU-58, with only 42 finer.

These two historic coins are both rare, high-quality Dahlonega Mint issues—perfect for any serious collector. If you are interested in one or both of these coins or something completely different, contact us today with your questions… We will be happy to assist you in any way possible!
