Historic and famous Cheriyanad Sri Balasubrahmanya Swami Temple is one of Major temple dedicated to Lord Subrahmanya Swami. According to the Historians the very artefacts maintained in the temple construction manifests that it is being constructed during Cheraman Perumal period. The Pillars at decorated entrance and hand railings at platform I front of Sanctum Sanctorum called “ Sopanam” has carved dialects which is faded due to long course of its existence. Some dialects are visible in pole or mast which is popularly known as ‘Kodimaram’.
In due course the temple came under the regime of Kayamkulam Raja. Most probably the renovation and Idol consecration has been done at this period. The King assigned or proclaimed various rights to different sects of people like temple ownership went to Trichur Kanayannur Oommenpalli Mana and administrative rights ‘Kaisthanam’ was given to Moosath family of Cheriyanad west Kumaramangalam, Tantric rights was bestowed with Thayhmon Tantrics and for Pooja was entrusted with Moothedathu Madom, Vaduvathil Madom, Neduvelil Madom, Pulimukhathu Madom, Ezhuntholil Madom which are popularly known as ‘Oorazhma’ . Daily chores related with temple rituals like lifting lamps, cleaning, garland making was entrusted with Chempakassery Unnikal.
The aesthetic prowess of Vasthukala is manifested in temple construction through renowned Vaasthu Sastra Experts Edavankkattu Achari’s exemplary work’s. The major part of ‘Daru’ Structures are gifted by this Vaastu Experts itself before Lord Balasubrahmany Swami.
