good morning everyone! Was scratching my cockatiel's head this morning in bed when these two sheaths just slipped right off of his little yellow crest.
In some shots, you can see one vertical black stripe on the outer layer of the sheath. I think that's where the calamus separates from the outside epidermal layer of the sheath.
Inside of the hollow sheath are more bits of rigid structures of keratin. You can see the black concentric bands if you look closely.
The little solid black bits are what I believe to be just leftover blood and material used to support the feather as it developed inside the pinfeather. As you know, all material inside the sheath (including the feather itself) dies and dries up as the pinfeather grows taller outwards, resulting in these little bits of biojunk once used for support and structure.
