Converting Cfm To Ach 50 Made Easy

In this video, I will explain the formula we use for converting CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) to ACH 50 (Air Changes per Hr) at 50 pascals. I'll use some air leakage rates that I gathered from a blower door test on my own home as an example.

A blower test typically gives a result in CFM at a particular pressure (Usually using the standard of 50 pascals), AHC 50 is a useful metric because it helps us understand an air leakage rate relative to a house's volume.

Imagine you had 2 houses that both scored 2,500 CFM. You might think that these 2 houses are equally leaky. But if one of these houses has an interior air volume of 10,000 cubic ft and the other a volume of 30,000 cubic ft. What then? The 2,500 CFM means something different to each house. Even though both houses scored 2,500 CFM they're not entirely the same. Converting to AHC 50 helps us account for this.

Exterior surface area to CFM may be a metric better yet than ACH, but I digress, that's a conversation for another time.
