Design for voice interactions | UX Design Tips
Today, more of us are buying smart home speakers that come with an intelligent voice assistant. Amazon’s Alexa, Google’s Google Home, and Apple’s HomePod are all smart devices that we use to control our homes and play music.
With an increase in APIs available to developers, companies are working hard to create their own apps on these smart speakers. Here are some tips for smart and natural voice interactions.
First, don’t let the smart assistant respond too fast or too slow. Some people think that the quicker an assistant responds to your question, the better the system is. Regrettably, this is a misconception because if you let an intelligent assistant respond too fast, the user may feel hasty and pressured. Researchers find that the optimal time for a response should be between 500ms to 1250ms.
Second, a smart assistant should talk less and do more. Keep the answer concise. If your assistant can express confirmation or doubt in a single word, please do so. Third, diversity the conversation. Try to think of as many responses as possible, so your users can feel that the assistant is alive and loveable.
Last but not least, you will need to ensure that your voice assistant has a mistake correction mechanism that directs the conversation back to normal when your user produces something that the system doesn’t understand.
