An Introduction to Variable Fonts
OpenType variable fonts are an adaptation of Apple's TrueType GX font variations to OpenType, integrating key aspects of the OpenType format, including OpenType Layout tables and TrueType and CFF glyph outline formats.
It also surpasses TrueType GX by offering better interoperability between different fonts and between variable fonts and font formatting specifications, such as those found in Cascading Style Sheets.
The technology allows the software to access any design instance for a continuous variety of designs defined in the font.
When a specific design instance is selected, the glyph outlines or other data values for that design instance are calculated as the font data is being processed during text layout and rasterization.

► The Adoption of Variables
In Windows 10, version 1709, Microsoft introduced the first variable font in Windows: the "Bahnschrift" font, which is a scan of DIN 1451.
The Adobe Creative Cloud 2018 version, released on October 18, 2017, includes support for variable fonts in Photoshop and Illustrator and includes variable conceptual versions of the Acumin, Minion, Myriad, Source Code, Sans Font, and Serif Fonts.
Creative Cloud 2020 added variable font support to InDesign.
The Dalton Maag type foundry has released variable fonts based on Objectiv and Mokoko.
Now, on March 12, 2020, Corel is adding this technology to CorelDRAW Graphic Suite 2020.
A Little More About Variable Fonts!
Variable fonts – Typography on the web has come a long way. We've gone from just a few basic, system-based fonts to now having almost endless possibilities. But all this choice leads to some challenges for web designers.
Performance, for example, can be negatively impacted for all the fonts we load on a page. Even using a single font family with multiple styles (bold, italic, etc.) requires multiple calls to the server.
That's where the great promise of variable fonts lies. Suddenly, there's no need to load half a dozen font files to retrieve the desired styles.
Instead, everything you need for a font family is included in a single file. It's a great boost to efficiency and easy to implement.
While potential performance gains may be the most obvious feature of variable fonts, there's more to love about them.
Another major advantage is that they offer a greater level of flexibility than traditional fonts.
For example, variable fonts allow designers to take advantage of CSS transitions. This can be used to create ultra-smooth animations as a font changes from one style to another.
Under this same umbrella, it's also possible to create custom font styles when using a variable font.
Because of how these fonts are constructed, you don't have to settle for predefined styles like light or extra bold.
Instead, you can opt for virtually anything in between, or adjust the available font axes to tailor the type to your needs.
