NFS High Stakes - это четвертая часть легендарной серии гоночных игр Need for Speed. Игра вышла в мае 1999 года, но несмотря на это, до сих пор у нее осталось много ценителей, которые считают, что новые части NFS многое потеряли после этой. EA Canada, разработчик игры, действительно создал что-то невероятное для того времени.
В игре появился новый режим - Карьера! Здесь вы начнете свою карьеру гонщика с любителя на соответствующей машине и поднимитесь до настоящего аса на Макларене. По мере продвижения по карьерной лестнице, вы будете зарабатывать деньги, которые сможете потратить на модификацию своей машины, а затем покупки новой. Кроме того - деньги пригодятся еще и на ремонт автомобиля, из-за того, что впервые в серии внедрили систему повреждений! Погнете кузов - ухудшится аэродинамика автомобиля, повредите подвеску - управление серьезно усложнится, повредите двигатель - соответственно, пострадает мощность машины...
Режим Погони в этой части игры стал несколько разнообразней — Наряду с Классическим режимом появились 2 новых: это "Побег" (Поймать преступника или удрать от полиции за отведённое время) и "Временное ограничение" (пройти трассу за отведённое время, или же мешать преступнику это сделать, если вы играете копом).
