According to a recent UN-Habitat report, half the world's population now lives in cities.
While that number is set to increase by two-thirds by 2050, the challenges of cities are growing exponentially, making it more important than ever to transform them.
The World Population Review assesses urban growth and metropolitan populations annually to understand global development trends.
In 2022, the list of the 20 most populous countries remained similar to the 2021 edition,
but with slight changes in numbers and positions.
Tokyo ranks as the world's largest city with a population of 37 million. It maintained its position, followed by Delhi and Shanghai in 2nd and 3rd place.
Comparing the results to the 2021 edition, the only declines seen in the top 20 affect both Japanese cities, Tokyo and Osaka.
In the rest of the list, the total number of metropolitan residents averaged 1.8. % increased.
In fact, the African cities of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Lagos in Nigeria recorded the highest rates of population growth in one year with 4.39% and 3.54% respectively.
The largest city in the Americas remains São Paulo, Brazil, followed closely by Mexico City and Buenos Aires, Argentina, further down the table.
In Europe, Istanbul is the most populous city, with over 14.5 million people.
