Orion: The future of NASA's manned spaceflight

Learn about the versatility of Orion and it's modular construction. Then climb in the state-of-the-art cockpit and discover how NASA was able to reduce the weight and increase performance.

The Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (MPCV) spacecraft is intended to carry a crew of up to 4 astronauts to destinations beyond-low Earth orbit (LEO). Orion will facilitate human exploration of the Moon, asteroids and Mars.

Orion's debut unmanned test flight is scheduled to launch aboard a Delta IV Heavy rocket on December 5, 2014. The first manned flight is scheduled for 2020.

NASA’s Orion spacecraft is built to take humans farther than they’ve ever gone before. Orion will serve as the exploration vehicle that will carry the crew to space, provide emergency abort capability, sustain the crew during the space travel, and provide safe re-entry from deep space return velocities.

Orion will launch on NASA’s new heavy-lift rocket, the Space Launch System. More powerful than any rocket ever built, SLS will be capable of sending humans to deep space destinations such as an asteroid and eventually Mars. Exploration Mission-1, in 2017, will be the first mission to integrate Orion and the Space Launch System.
