Brit Milah is a three-dimensional pact
Brit Milah could never be replaced by a surgical procedure. Brit Milah is a three-dimensional covenant involving the boy's body and spirit, a covenant between him and the people of Israel and an indissoluble covenant between the boy and God.
What is it?
The Brit Milah is a positive precept of the Torah in which God commands that every Jewish boy has it. It is one of the most sacred rituals and, since it is performed without the child's awareness, it signifies an act of faith above logic, maintained through the generations; it is synonymous with a living and eternal covenant between man and God.
The first
Brit Milah is the special sign that has distinguished the Jew among the nations, ever since the patriarch Abraham do it to himself and all his household, by Divine command, at the age of 99.
When Yishmael, Abraham's first son, performed the Brit Milah, he was already 13 years old and was fully capable of understanding this commandment. He was proud of his decision to rationally submit to a precept of God. Their acceptance of the Brit Milah was limited to reason.
Yitzchak, on the other hand, was born a year after Abraham was commanded to perform the Brit and was circumcised at only eight days old, a baby without intellectual development.
