🎹 SoundShockAudio Tip #10: Creating a Wide Mix
In order to compete with today's modern mixes, you must have a wide mix.
Many producers fall into the trap of thinking that they must stereo spread all the elements in their track to create this width.
This will actually create a flat mix and cause phasing issues
In order to create a wide mix, you need to have elements that are not only wide in the mix, but also ones that have little to no stereo information.
Having these two varying widths will create the perception of depth that will highlight the elements that are wide in your mix.
ACTION TO TAKE
Decide what elements you want to be narrow and wide in your mix and mix them accordingly.
You can use the lists below as a guide for where to place your elements in the stereo field.
Elements that work well in mono or are narrow in the mix:
Kick
Sub
Bass
Snare/Clap
Vocals (Vocals in verses and intros work well in mono. Important to note that even if your vocals are in mono, they will usually have delay and reverb on them which add a little stereo width)
Elements that work well stereo spread:
Leads
Pads
Bass (This can work well in mono and as stereo spread. Use your ears to decide what works best for your song.)
Snare/Clap
FX
Background Vocals
-Hi Hats
Vocals (Vocals that are in the chorus or drop work well stereo spread)
Also, reference other tracks in the same genre or style that you are working in to get a better understanding of where specific elements can go in the stereo field and replicate that in your own mix.
