On October 30, 1938, starting at 8 p.m., a radio broadcast caused panic across the United States. During what was then prime-time radio in New York, another Mercury Theatre went on the air.
The weekly program was broadcast by CBS to a small audience. This continued until Halloween Eve, when the young director Orson Welles adapted the novel The War of the Worlds for radio drama.
