3. The New Ranch
In the morning, George and Lennie walked to the ranch. Before they went inside, George gave Lennie a rule.
"Lennie, when we meet the boss, don't say anything. I will talk. You only listen. If you talk, the boss will think you are stupid, and he will not give us work."
"I won't say a word, George," Lennie said.
They went into the bunkhouse. This was the long room where the workers slept. There were many small beds inside. An old man was there. His name was Candy, and he was the cleaner of the ranch. He had only one hand, because he lost the other hand in an accident at work.
Candy had an old dog. The dog was very old and could not see well. It walked slowly and it smelled bad. But Candy loved his dog. They were together for many years.
Soon the boss came in. He was a short, fat man, and he asked many questions. "Where do you come from? Why do you travel together?"
George answered for both of them. "We are friends. We travel together and work together." The boss looked at them in a strange way, because most workers travelled alone. But he gave them the job.
Then a young man came into the room. His name was Curley, and he was the boss's son. Curley was small and thin, but he was angry and he liked to fight. He had small fists, and he wanted to show everyone that he was strong.
Curley looked at big Lennie. He did not like big men. "Can't you talk?" he said to Lennie in a hard voice.
George answered quickly. "He doesn't talk much, but he works hard." Curley looked at them with cold eyes. Then he left the room.
When Curley was gone, George was worried. "Lennie," he said quietly, "stay away from that man. He is dangerous. He likes to fight, and he hates big men like you."
"I don't want trouble, George," Lennie said. He was a little afraid. "I don't like this place. Let's go away."
"We can't go," George said. "We have no money. We must work here for some time. Just be careful. Don't talk to Curley. And remember our rule about the river."
"I remember, George," Lennie said. "If there is trouble, I go to the river and hide."
"Good," said George. But in his heart, he felt that this ranch was not a safe place for his friend.
