Apple introduced a revolution on September 9th. Thanks to Live Translation, real-time conversations across language barriers are possible. This makes it possible to understand five different languages without any effort. A comparable range of features has never existed before. But users in Germany and the EU are left out – the feature remains blocked here. Why? Because of EU bureaucratic hurdles.

"Live Translation with AirPods is not available if you are in the EU and the country or region of your Apple account is also in the EU," Apple stated in a press release.

The culprit is the Digital Markets Act (DMA), the Brussels law that forces Apple to make its innovations available to third-party manufacturers before they can even be rolled out to its own customers. Despite Apple's efforts, the complex requirements make it impossible to release new innovations in the EU at the same time as the rest of the world. Apple has even proposed solutions to reconcile innovation and data protection. But Brussels is blocking them.

NIUS reporters Alexander Dorfmann and Alexander Kissler spoke with moderator Alex Purrucker about the topic on NIUS Live.
