Why We Need to Remember Our Queer Ancestors
In this episode of the Trans-Affirmative Podcast,Dr. Doug and director Dante Alencastre talk about the award-winning documentary movie Dante directed, "AIDS Diva: The Legend of Connie Norman." Connie was an important leader in the AIDS movement in Los Angeles. She advanced the cause of trans liberation and also queer spirituality--a powerhouse, a Diva, a force to contend with, a visionary. Dr. Doug is one of the talking heads in the movie who was a member of the activist group the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power and interviewed Connie for a cover story in the L.A. Weekly in 1996.

Some Quotes: We need more representation and support for the LGBTQ+ community. One thing I wanted to discuss today is the issue of visibility and representation of transgender individuals in media. What are your thoughts on this, Dante? Dante Alencastre: Visibility and representation are crucial, especially for transgender individuals. There is still a lot of work to be done in the media, but I do see progress. We need more authentic and positive portrayals of trans individuals in film and television. Dr. Doug: Absolutely. Another issue that we see is the lack of understanding and acceptance from society towards the trans community. What can we do to break down these barriers? Dante Alencastre: Education and open conversations are key. We need to educate ourselves and others about the trans experience and have open dialogues about these issues. Only then can we truly break down these barriers and create a more accepting and inclusive society. Dr. Doug: Thank you so much, Dante, for sharing your insight and knowledge with us today.
