Arbeeny discussed tips to "outsmart" hardware restrictions by dividing the migration into two phases: an "uptime" phase and a "downtime" phase. By migrating stable, historical data while systems are still operational, companies can reduce the amount of data that needs to be transferred during the actual downtime window. This approach, which they call the "catch-up" phase, involves only transferring the most recent changes, making it easier to meet strict downtime requirements.
"There's a large chunk of data that I can migrate in the uptime, while the system is still running, users are doing their daily job, I'm migrating that data, and that gets the lion's share over to the new S4/HANA system. And then I can take a much smaller downtime window, what I'll call, the catchup period, where we'll just bring over anything that's changed (...), in that downtime window," SNP Group NA CTO, Steele Arbeeny.
