NUU Mobile | Tutorial Tuesday | Episode 6 | Setting the Display Sleep Timer
Welcome to Tutorial Tuesday Number Six, where we’ll talk about setting your display’s shut-off, or sleep timer. This week’s a basic one, but we’ve had several inquiries about it, so I felt it would be good to touch on it.
In almost all cases, when you first buy a phone, the display is set to shut off pretty quickly - within 30 seconds or so. This may be considered helpful to keep battery consumption down, or to reduce chance of burn-in on OLED displays, but for many, it could be quite annoying when the screen keeps turning off again and again.
So here’s how you can customize that.
(This tutorial was done on stock Android 10 - there may be slight differences on other versions)
Once again, open your app drawer, and tap Settings. Scroll down to Display, and tap on it.
Once in Display, tap Advanced, and you’ll see the menu expand.
Within the expanded menu, you’ll want to look for an item labeled “Screen timeout”, but in previous versions of Android, it’s called “Sleep”. Either way, tap on it.
Now you’ll have a menu showing amounts of time ranging from 15 seconds up to 30 minutes. Depending on which one you choose, this is how long your screen will stay on without you touching the phone. If you’re more battery-conscious, you might want to pick a lower number. Since the screen turning off also engages the phone’s lock screen, this might also be a good choice if you’re more security conscious.
On the other hand, if you find yourself constantly turning your phone back on after the display has timed-out, you might want to set a higher figure. I personally find 5 minutes to be a good amount, as I sometimes like to use my phone to display things over longer periods of time.
As promised, a very basic tutorial this week, but still a useful thing to know.
As always, feel free to leave any comments - questions I didn’t answer here, any suggestions, or requests for new tutorials - it’s all welcome. See you next Tuesday!
