The gender pay gap has come a long way in recent decades, but it’s still a persistent problem weighing on women’s wallets.
Here are some of our favorite tips for women on navigating the problem, so they can still meet their financial goals.
If you’re on the job hunt, don’t sell yourself short. The best way to make sure you get what you’re worth: Don’t consider the money talk taboo
You’re going to want to research specific salary data to know if you’re really paid to scale, and that means finding people who stack up similarly against you. Look for someone with similar educational levels and experiences who also has a job in your industry and location. That doesn’t just mean utilizing online salary data, but chatting with colleagues and other professionals in your industry about what they’re earning.
If a recruiter or manager asks you, avoid divulging your earning history or salary expectations
This is especially true if you haven’t done your research because you don’t want to throw out a number that significantly devalues your worth.
Instead, say you’d like to learn a little bit more about the position. And if you’re pressed to provide a number, give a tight salary window, somewhere in the range of $5,000 and $10,000.
Don’t be afraid to job hop
While it’s not uncommon for workers to get a raise every year, they most of the time prove to be minimal unless they’re paired with a promotion. Most workers tend to see their biggest pay gains when they take on a new opportunity.
Negotiating is going to be your most powerful tool. And while it might feel uncomfortable, come to the table with specific ways that you can demonstrate your value and worth and how you’ve brought value to your team. Maybe even think about practicing in the mirror a time or two. And most of all, remember this: Recruiters expect it when they give you your initial offer.
