Growing Up Ceratopsian: Yoshi's Trike and Juvie Trike III
Finally, Yoshi's Trike! This gorgeous Triceratops display is at the Museum of the Rockies.
The brown bones are casts of original material, white are of the bones not found that were cast from other specimens and scaled to the correct size. I wish more places did this.
Yoshi is a sub-adult based on histology. At 20’ long, it was not done growing! How long would those horns have grown??? I didn’t measure them this time but after-the-fact it looks like 30 cm was added to the tip, on top of the 90 (?) cm preserved (I can’t tell where the horn stops at the base). How long would the keratinous sheath have been? 1 cm? 10 cm? More?
Yoshi's trike was found between the two existing species of Triceratops layers. Is it a transitional species? It has features of T. prorsus and T. horridus.
Note how Juvie Trike III horns point up and backwards while Yoshi’s points forward. The little ones don't look like the adults. These two stunning trikes side by side are a great example of ontogeny!
