A protection group defines a set of data sources to protect, such as clients, VMware objects or save sets. As mentioned in the definition a protection group is used to group together assets that you want to backup, depending on the assets or data that you want to protect, we have 4 main types of groups of which 2 have a static and dynamic sub type but all are listed below

Client : Select this option when the group will contain a static list of client resources to back up or clone. When you select this option, the Clients section displays a list of configured clients on the NetWorker server. Use the checkbox to select or remove client resources from the group. Use this group to protect client file system backups (including snapshot backups of supported Dell EMC storage arrays or appliances), NDMP backups, NMDA backups, NMM backups, and Block Based backups.

Dynamic Client : Select this option to define a dynamic list of client resources to back up or clone. When you select this option, the Dynamic Clients section appears. You can choose to add all of the existing client resources to the group or only client resources that contain specific text in the Tag attribute. Use this group to protect client file system backups, NDMP backup, NMDA backups, NMM backups and Block Based backups.

Saveset Query: You can select this option to clone a specific list of save sets. When you select this option, the Query section displays a list of attributes you can use to create a query that generates the list of save sets. Use this group type to clone save sets.

Saveset ID List: Select this option to clone save sets on an ongoing basis, based on defined save set criteria. When you select this option, the Save set section appears. You can specify a list of save set to clone, in the format save set ID/clone ID. Specify one save set on each line. Use this group type to clone save sets.

VMware: Select this option to select VMware objects to be backed up. You have an option to make the selection dynamic using the “Rule” resource. If you have not checked this video yet, the link to the video is on the description.

NAS Device: Select this option to backup file system snapshots, and NAS snapshots. You can clone data after a snapshot backup job completes or concurrently.
