760 million light-years away, a supermassive black hole has awakened after a hundred million years of complete silence. Two jets of plasma, each nearly a million light-years long, erupted from the center of the galaxy J1007+3540. For comparison, the entire Milky Way is only a hundred thousand light-years in diameter. ───────────────────────────────────────────
This issue of Late Science tells the full story of this awakening: how it was discovered, what it means for the galaxy, and why it directly concerns us.

You will learn:
— What are supermassive black holes and why are they at the center of every large galaxy?
— How the VLA radio telescope allowed us to observe three epochs of activity in one object at once?
— Why a black hole's silence is more dangerous than its activity?
— How black holes "kill" their galaxies—and what quenching is?
— What is happening to Sagittarius A*, the black hole at the center of our Milky Way?
— Why the Fermi Bubbles? This is a trace of the final awakening of our own black hole.

The study was published in April 2026 by Shobha Kumari's team (India) in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.
