Opel Astra G, EGR valve. Car repair. The car smokes, consumes slightly more fuel, and is a bit sluggish. I ran a self-diagnosis through the OBD port with a paperclip. The check engine light showed error P1405, "ERG valve fault." I decided to remove the valve and see what was wrong. Could it be repaired, or would I have to buy a new one? I unscrewed the valve and pulled it out of its seat. It turned out to be clogged. Using WD-40, I cleaned the valve of soot and dirt for 20 minutes. Then I applied 12 volts to the outer contacts to check if the valve was still working. It was, and the valve stem moved. I cleaned the valve seat and reinstalled it. I started the car.
