No ghost ship in maritime folklore is more famous than the Flying Dutchman, which has inspired numerous paintings, horror stories, movies, and even an opera.
The first mention of the ship appears in the late 1700s in George Barrington's book A voyage to Botany Bay and since then the legend has grown and the story goes that the Flying Dutchman is a ship out of Amsterdam captained by a man named van der Decken.
The ship was making its way to the East Indies when it encountered dangerous weather to make the crossing near the Cape of Good. van der Decken killed his first mate and swore he would make it past the Cape. The ship sank in a storm.
To this day, the Flying Dutchman is one of the ghost ships and has been seen by deep sea fishermen. All have claimed it is making its never-ending journey across the oceans.
