We all probably know for writing you have word processing software, the commonly used is the Microsoft word, this is because a lot of PCs already come with preloaded Microsoft word. There are other apps for collaborative writing such as Manubot. Manubot is a free open source, internet based, and it helps to type and write in Markdown. Markdown is a code-based formatting language that is used by physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists who code on regular basis and less popular in other disciplines such as biology and chemistry. Disadvantage of Manubot is that it cannot be used on mobile devices. But you have bibliographies built in this system and you can reference everything by using DOIs circumventing the typical reference managers.
One of the other options is Overleaf, however it comes with a cost of $15-$30 per month, but they do have academic discounts. The writing language it uses is type-in format a LaTex which means that it’s also compactible if you download it and use it in LaTex itself. It cannot be used with Mobile devices and citations can be imported from reference managers.
