Windows 10 Paging File

Windows operating systems use a paging file called pagefile.sys (a hidden system file, usually located on the C:\ drive). This file acts as a kind of "extension" for the computer's RAM (also known as virtual memory) and ensures that programs can run even when physical RAM is insufficient. Windows 10, 8.1, and Windows 7 also attempt to move unused data from RAM to the paging file, and, according to Microsoft, each new version does this better.

This guide details how to configure the paging file in Windows 10 and previous versions: increase it, decrease it, disable it completely, or move it to another drive. It also covers current recommendations for properly configuring virtual memory.
