Jesus said, “…and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

The state of Mississippi needs to heed that message.

All across the globe, the mere mention of the word, Mississippi, conjures images of its scandalous past: eerie echoes of lynching trees, chilling tales of racial violence, and the haunting specters of Jim Crow. This notorious reputation obscures the state’s legendary music and rich culture, leaving many to question: What truly lies beneath the surface?

This is part 1 of a 3 part series.

And, in a few weeks, stay tuned for Part 2, where we will move forward into more modern times to talk about the post-Civil War “Black Codes,” and Jim Crow laws that white Mississippians used to institutionalize racial segregation and disenfranchisement.

Finally, in part 3, we will look at Mississippi’s notorious racial violence, like lynchings and the murder of Emmett Till, and how it fiercely resisted the Civil Rights Movement in the mid-20th century. Controversial use of Confederate symbols and ongoing racial disparities in areas like education and economic opportunity further underscore Mississippi’s troubled racial past.
