True North on the iPhone Compass App
The iPhone (iOS) compass is not set to True North (TN) by default, but rather Magnetic North (MN). This can pose a problem to anyone using the iPhone compass for backcountry navigation or orienteering. Being a few degrees off could mean several hundred feet or miles off-course.
This video demonstrates the iPhone's default compass settings and why setting the magnetic declination is important. The video shows how to change the settings between Magnetic North and True North.
