How can we recognize if our horse is experiencing a serious discomfort?
We can do it using an observation protocol called RHpE. In this video we see what it is, what scientific value it has and which studies have led it to become so important.

1. Application of the Pain Ethogram in Ridden Horses
This study examined 60 sport and riding school horses, demonstrating a significant correlation between RHpE scores and the presence of lameness. The results showed that the RHpE score can be used to identify musculoskeletal pain in horses during specific activities such as dressage.

2. Use of RHpE in British Eventing
In an analysis of 1010 starts in British Eventing events, a correlation was found between RHpE scores and dressage penalties. Horses with high RHpE scores were more likely to show signs of pain and to withdraw from competition. This study highlighted how the index can be a useful tool for improving equine performance and welfare.

3. Study of Horses with Musculoskeletal Pain
This research documented the application of the RHpE index to 150 horses with a history of poor performance, comparing scores before and after diagnostic anesthesia. The results showed a significant reduction in RHpE scores after the intervention, confirming the relationship between observed behaviors and musculoskeletal pain.
