Santa Claus, Father Christmas, or Old Man Christmas, whatever you call him, rewards good children with gifts and punishes bad ones with coal. In fact, it wouldn't hurt if someone misbehaved so we have coal for the barbecue, but that punishment is nothing compared to what Krampus does.
This demonic creature appears between the night of December 5th and the early morning of the 6th, rattling his rusty chains to scare naughty children, or those who lack the Christmas spirit, with his presence.
Krampus's punishments range from destroying presents and spanking children to make them behave, to kidnapping them for a whole year in the underworld to reform them, or even eating them, depending on how they woke up that day. So, just in case, behave and listen to your parents.
But for everyone's peace of mind, Krampus is merely a legend in the folklore of Alpine countries such as Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Slovenia, and Switzerland.
In fact, these countries even hold parades to celebrate this curious tradition.
