Reciprocating Piston Engine, Aerospace Engineering Lecture 76
The four-stroke reciprocating piston engine powering small propeller airplanes is explained. The mechanism of the piston and cylinder based engine which uses petrol or gasoline for fuel is explained. The intake, compression, power and exhaust stroke of the thermodynamic system is explained. Indicated power of the engine is related to number of cylinders and RPM of shaft. The power available from the propeller engine combined system is derived.
