Asatoya Yunta (Sung by: Koi-na)
This is an old Okinawan folk song passed down in the Yaeyama Islands.
Asatoya Kuyama, a beautiful woman who lived on Taketomi Island during the Ryukyu Kingdom era, defied officials and rejected their marriage proposals.
Kuyama's strong will is passed down as a symbol of the rebellious spirit of the Yaeyama people.
The original song was a type of work song, sung as a rice-planting song.
No instruments are used, and the song is often sung in a male-female dialogue.
Powerful accompaniment is added to synchronize the timing of exertion.
