Murtaz Khurtsilava was a central defender whose reliability, courage, and jumping ability made him one of the strongest Soviet players in his position in the 1960s and early 1970s. A product of Dinamo Tbilisi, he played 293 matches for the club in the Soviet Championship, becoming the national champion in 1964 and winning bronze medals five times. As a member of the USSR national team, Khurtsilava twice participated in the World Cup finals (1966 and 1970), was runner-up at the 1972 European Championship, and won bronze at the Munich Olympics. From 1972 to 1974, he served as the national team captain. An Honored Master of Sports, he was named among the 33 best footballers of the season ten times, and in 2003, he was named Georgia's best footballer of the past 50 years. After retiring, he worked as a coach, managing Tbilisi Dynamo and other Georgian clubs.
