My current work area is the further processing of aluminum oxide.

An important process step there, a procedural process step, is calcination.

That’s where even more water is removed from aluminum oxide hydrate, making a very, very dry, hard product, where certain properties of the aluminum oxide are also influenced, for instance to create products for customers from the automotive industry or the refinery sector that they can use.

Typically, those are catalysts.

So, for one thing, I think it’s fun that there is a very, very strong technical component, but in the same breath, I should also say that it’s really important to me that you work with others here, and it is very, very important to get along with your colleagues and work together to find solutions.

There’s real teamwork happening in every plant.

Well, breaking the ice with your colleagues, that’s the first thing. Usually, the colleagues on your shift are a little bit reserved and just want to see – okay, what can the new guy do, someone who might be new to the plant or new to the company?

And so, it’s just important to build a connection with them and show them, Hey guys, I want us all to work together, and show them that you know a little bit about the material already.

But of course, at the same time you have to say, Okay, I can’t know everything yet, I’m new here, you’re the experts.

You guys need to help me exploit this potential with any extra knowledge I might have from other plants already.

And the thing is, once you have one foot in the door, the other one follows.

Another thing that’s especially helpful is if you can somehow prove that you can tackle problems as they come up, ultimately.
