Sixteen years after its initial recording, the elusive album "Crank It, We’re Doomed" from renowned artist Todd Snider is finally seeing the light of day. While this was a project shelved in the midst of Snider’s explosive creative era, its eventual release has fans and music enthusiasts on the edge of their seats.
Reflecting on that prolific period in his life, Snider remarks, “It was very much a blur. A blur not because of the party going on, but because of how many songs I was coming up with. Like they were really coming at me, and I didn’t know what to do with them all.” An exploration into why the album was never initially released brings about a humorous recall from Snider, noting that, “The year was 2007 — the sea was angry that year.”
When explaining the sheer volume and thematic variety of the tracks, Snider shares, “At the end, I was torn. I felt like not only did I have all these story songs, sort of normal songs, there also were all these protest songs. And really that is where I lost the plot.”
Years later, the whereabouts of the album's stereo masters remained a mystery, leading to a collaborative hunt. Recounting a conversation with Eric McConnell, Snider says, “We were sitting there just wracking our brains, ‘Where could it be,’ ”. And the answer? Mastering engineer Jim DeMain had them all along.
Now, with fresh ears and a new perspective, Snider reflects, “I couldn’t see it conceptually back then. But now I can see it was about a guy losing the plot.”
"Crank It, We’re Doomed" promises not only an introspective journey into Snider's artistic process but also a historical treasure for music aficionados. Stay tuned for more.
