Yulbo, a slash-and-burn farmer in Mt. Jiri, lives with his elderly mother. He meets Buyong, a wandering woman formerly a member of a traveling troupe, and they become husband and wife.
Yulbo yearns for true love and acts unfilially toward his mother, while Buyong covets other men and waits for Jiwon, her former lover from the troupe.
Yulbo digs up wild ginseng, but Buyong hides it, intending to take it and run away with him when Jiwon appears.
A year later, Jiwon arrives and attempts to kill Buyong, accusing her of betrayal for being with Yulbo; however, moved by Yulbo's earnest pleas and love, Jiwon leaves.
Deeply moved by Yulbo, Buyong repents of her wrongdoings and confesses her true love to him. The two begin to climb toward a high, deserted mountain.
